In her poetry collection Razglednice / Postcards, Mirjam Dular focuses on the space between two people – on closeness and absence, memory, language, the body, and everything that remains unspoken in relationships.
For her, a postcard is more than a message from another place. It is proof that a connection between two people still exists: someone writes, someone reads, while a distance remains between them – a distance that may be physical, emotional, or linguistic.
An important aspect of the collection is also the movement between Slovenian and English. The two languages function not merely as translations of one another, but create a space of dual belonging and incomplete understanding.
The accompanying essay by Gabriela Babnik Ouattara particularly emphasises dialogue, closeness, and the sense that a relationship often exists precisely in what remains between words.
One of the collection’s key moments is condensed into a brief dialogue:
“Are you?” – “I. Am.”
Dular writes directly, intimately, and without unnecessary pathos. Her poems explore how to remain close to someone who is far away, and how to create a space within language where two people can nevertheless meet.
